DUKE OF YORK
(SINGING) The Grand Old Duke of York, he had ten thousand men. He marched them up to the top of the hill…

ALFIE
(SINGING) And he marched them down again!

DUKE OF YORK
(BRIGHTLY) You know my song! Marvellous! Hello! I’m Freddy, the Duke of York. I’m the King’s younger brother.

ALFIE
Pleased to meet you, your Freddiness.

DUKE OF YORK
(HASTILY) It’s not true, you know. The song. My military career might not have been as great as Lord Nelson, but I did my best. Being a commander isn’t easy, you know…

BILLIE
Is this your bedroom?

DUKE OF YORK
(PROUDLY) Do you like it! George chose the wallpaper, of course. He’s awfully good at things like that.

BILLIE
It’s very yellow!

DUKE OF YORK
(PROUDLY) It is, isn’t it! ‘Chrome yellow’ – it’s the latest thing. And it’s awfully expensive!

ALFIE
Look at those boxes! You could keep a lot of cake in one of those.

DUKE OF YORK
(LAUGHING) They’re not for cake! They’re for my ceremonial hats. Lots of feathers and plumes.

ALFIE
(DISAPPOINTED) Oh.

DUKE OF YORK
But that’s an excellent idea. I might ask chef to bake me a cake in case I get hungry at night. (SINGING) The Grand Old Duke of York… (fades away)

ALFIE & BILLIE
Goodbye, Freddy! See you soon
