15. Up the Stairs [+]

North Stairway of Royal Pavilion

Transcript

We are now back in the Long Gallery. Notice the staircase, which is a good example of George’s love of illusion. The handrails look like bamboo but are made of mahogany painted to look like bamboo. The fretwork panels are of cast iron, again painted to imitate bamboo. The staircase was made in London in 1815 by William Slark of Clerkenwell, who also made the original steam table in the Great Kitchen. When you reach the top of the stairs, turn right to visit the North West Gallery and the Tea Room. If you need further directions please do ask a member of staff.
